SEATTLE, WA -- Alexa will now speak in Spanish. Amazon rolled out its multilingual mode Friday for its voice assistant and the Echo device.

Alexa will respond in English or Spanish in the US, depending on the language the user spoke, especially useful in a country where the second most spoken language is Spanish. It can also be set to always reply in Spanish and users can ask Alexa for new Latin music playlists.

The tech giant also released the latest Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) for developers to build skills for Spanish speaking customers in the US using the new Spanish (es-US) language model, according to a company statement.

In addition to the US, Amazon announced the Multilingual mode in two other countries, English and Hindi in India, and English and French in Canada, with the intention of Alexa being able to switch between languages as easily as bilingual speakers do at home.

With billions of people in the world speaking more than one language, many homes are not homogenous when it comes to languages anymore,” Amazon explained in the announcement.
