NRF: Seasonal Jobs Expected to Grow This Holiday Season

Girls gone shopping.

Hiring for seasonal jobs is underway. Retailers have started hiring extra staff to meet expected demand during the holiday season. The National Retail Federation expects retailers to hire between 530,000 and 590,000 temporary workers this year.

Despite an increasingly tight labor market, and trade uncertainty with China, NRF expects to see holiday retail sales during November and December to increase between 3.8 percent and 4.2 percent over sales last year.

“The U.S. economy is continuing to grow and consumer spending is still the primary engine behind that growth," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay says. “ Nonetheless, there has clearly been a slowdown brought on by considerable uncertainty around issues including trade, interest rates, global risk factors and political rhetoric."

Retailers hired 554,000 seasonal employees in 2018.
