October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has a few tips to protect yourself.

DHS partners with industry annually in October with the intention to raise American’s awareness about keeping them secure online.

This year they’ve issued a comprehensive guide, the NCSAM 2019 toolkit, to help promote positive cybersecurity habits.

One issue DHS is warning against is the use of social media bots, programs designed to disseminate malicious behavior through social media.

The Office of Cyber and Infrastructure Analysis warns the use of these bots are likely to increase, saying in a release, “bots use artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and other programs or databases to imitate legitimate users posting content."

The toolkit also suggests that Americans preparing to travel, “back up your contacts, financial data, photos, videos, and other mobile device data to another device or cloud service in case your device is compromised and you have to reset it to factory settings.”
