On the heels of ransomware attacks affecting state and local government partners, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is urging these entities to take a trio of actions to protect against these threats.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, the National Governors Association and the National Association of State Chief Information Officers on July 29 called on state, local, territorial and tribal government partners to beef up their cybersecurity to avoid falling prey to ransomware.

The three steps outlined involve backing up systems immediately and regularly, reinforcing rudimentary cybersecurity awareness and education among employees, and refining cyber incident response plans to include how to request help from external cyber first responders.

“Through this collective action, we can better protect ourselves and our communities, and further advance the cyber preparedness and resilience of the Nation,” the release from CISA said.
