HOUSTON, TX -- A 20-year-old man who said it was his “dream” to be a martyr has pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

In announcing his guilty plea on July 8, the Justice Department said Kaan Sercan Damlarkaya from Houston, Texas, tried to join and support the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham and provided information to other ISIS supporters about machetes, homemade automatic weapons and bombs.

In online conversation with people he believed were ISIS supporters Damlarkaya shared his plans to travel to fight for ISIS in Syria or Afghanistan. If he couldn’t join ISIS overseas, Damlarkaya stated he would carry out an attack on non-Muslims in the U.S., saying it was his “dream” to be a martyr.

In providing information to other ISIS supporters, Damlarkaya described how to make explosives formula and warned the others to “take safety seriously while you make this” to be “useful until you can strike.”

He also gave information about how to construct an automatic weapon and said he could buy a “GIANT machete for $15, adding, “So not all of us can get a gun or make explosives, but we can afford to buy a $15 knife.”

Damlarkaya now faces 20 years in federal prison.
