Air Force Merger to Create New Information Warfare Unit

In an effort to offer better options for combatant commanders, the Air Force is merging its two organizations to create a new information warfare unit.

Slated for this summer, the merger of 24th and 25th Air Forces at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, aims to better integrate cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, and would establish the first information warfare Numbered Air Force, according toan April 4 announcement from the Air Combat Command. The amalgamation would also better align these units with priorities laid out in the 2018 National Defense Strategy.

Combining the two organizations will “both improve the quality and speed of decision-making and deliver improved effects for commanders,” said Gen. Mike Holmes, commander of Air Combat Command.

The final organizational structure is yet to be decided, but an activity ceremony is expected to be planned for later this summer.
